Fruits can be beneficial to a diabetic's health. But there are good choices, and some that are not advisable to eat too much of since they can raise blood glucose quite a bit.
Many foods in this group are full of fiber and safe for us diabetics to eat. The reason that fiber rich foods are so nutritious is because they have a lower glycemic index. Therefore, instead of spiking the blood glucose levels, they increase the levels more slowly. Your choices that are fiber rich, are those that have skins which are really edible and seeds. The skins and seeds in are what has the most of fiber. The highest in fiber are:
apples
berries for the most part such as blueberries, which are very high in fiber content
Pears and apricots are good sources of fiber
Apples have other health benefits for you as a diabetic. Apples that are not cooked contain pectin, which can improve your blood sugars.
Grapefruits have benefits for diabetics too. It help with weight loss, which helps your insulin resistance. Blood cholesterol levels have also shown reductions from eating grapefruits.
Fruits high in fructose are also great for diabetics.
Fructose does not make insulin metabolize, so this makes fructose a great choice for diabetics. These choices usually include watermelon, apples, and pears.
Some not-so-good choices are bananas, mangoes, grapes and oranges. They can be enjoyed in smaller amounts, but if you eat too many from this group, they will raise blood sugars quite a bit.
Your flavored juices are not very wise to consume a lot of. These juices have a lot of added sugars, and no fiber. And many of these types of juices have much more sugar in them than a regular sugared soda!
