Diabetes insipidus is caused by many things, but the main reason why somebody develops this disease is highly related to the anti diuretic hormone. Either your body does not produce the necessary amount of this hormone or your kidneys do not recognize the hormone, either way diabetes insipidus is the result. There are two major symptoms when talking about diabetes insipidus: excessive thirst and excessive production of diluted urine. There are also other signs as well, but there two are the most important.

Treatment is a must in diabetes insipidus cases. If it is an emergency case, you can drink very much fluid in order to replace the loss of urine. When you get to the ER or to your doctor, he will tell you that dextrose is also very good in diabetes inspipidus cases or IV' s with hyposmolar may also be given to you.

If inadequate thirst is your case, then desmopression is the medication for you. This drug can be given to diabetes insipidus patients almost three times every day. In this case, hospitalization may also be needed in order to receive all the fluids that you need when suffering from diabetes insipidus. If pharmaceutical therapy is the choice for your diabetes insipidus case, then vasopression is what you need. There are also many other drugs that you can take for your diabetes insipidus case, but this particular one can be administrated orally, nasally or subcutaneouslly, thus having an advantage over the other drugs.

If surgery must be done to treat your diabetes insipidus case, then here is what is going to happen:

- after the surgery, nurses will give you doses of desmopressin and fluids for your diabetes insipidus case;

- if pituitary surgery was your choice, then you will be administered desmopressin almost every twelve hours and you will also be given fluids to better handle your diabetes insipidus case;

If there is one thing that you should be happy about in diabetes insipidus case is that there is no need for a special diet. Even if you are suffering from the chronic type of diabetes, dietary changes do not have to be made. However, you must understand that it is very important you control and balance the intake of water and salt. This is of major importance when it comes to diabetes insipidus.

Diabetes insipidus patients must also take some special precautions. For example, when travelling, always be prepared to vomit.
