Diabetes and Fitness
Exercise, along with a good healthy diet and the right nutrition, helps decrease your body fat, which type 2's are more prone to like myself for instance. It helps to normalize the glucose metabolism, and decreases your coronary risk quite a bit. Another positive side to walking every day at least for 15 minutes is that it does serve to lower your high cholesterol, and helps hypertension. Cardiac conditioning should be the foundation of your exercise program. Try for at least 20 minutes of sustained activity three to five days a week. If you suffer from problems with your feet, skip things such as jogging or step exercises. Try instead for even strolling. This is better than no activity at all, and has some advantages. Fluid intake is very important during physical activity when you are diabetic. If you are taking pills or insulin, then you need to consider taking a high-glucose sports drink like Gatorade or fruit juices to keep your blood sugars stabilized and from going too low. Drink your fluid before you work out to begin with, especially when taking a brisk walk as brisk walking will really lower your sugars and can make you hypoglycemic before you know it.
Flexibility exercises are important too, also referred to as stretching. This form of activity helps to keep joints flexible and reduces the chances of injury during other activities. Some nice gentle stretching for about 5-10 minutes helps your body to warm up, and prepare for walking or aerobic activity.
Exercise is a great physical therapy. It is sometimes wise to get a bit of professional guidance to begin the right program for you. You and your dietitian or doctor can work together to fit your exercise schedule into your health plan. The payoff's are great and from my own experience, helps me to maintain my weight. You can maintain your weight too with the right fitness plan.
