Sexual Problems and Diabetes

The sexual problems of diabetes are related to nerve impulses or signals. The internal organs like the heart and bladder for example, are controlled by nerve signals as well. The body's response to sexual stimuli, would also be involuntary. Autonomic nerve signals increase the blood flow to the genitals and will cause smooth muscle tissue to relax. When the autonomic nerves are damaged, this will taper normal sexual functions.

Erectile Dysfunction Erectile dysfunction in men who have diabetes range from 20 to 85 percent. This problem is defined as the inability to have an erection, or the inability to sustain as erection.

Diabetic men are highly likely to have sexual problems concerning erectile dysfunction more than men who do not have diabetes. These diabetic men are also likely to have this problem much earlier then men without diabetes.

Other causes of erectile dysfunction include hypertension, kidney disease, alcoholism and blood vessel disease. ED may also occur because of medication and side effects, psychological factors, hormonal deficiencies, or smoking.

Men experiencing ED should talk to the doctor, which is step one in getting help. Your doctor should review your history with you, conduct lab tests, and other health problems you may have. There are also tests that you can do at home that checks for erections during sleeping time.

Treatments for ED vary widely. Pills or a vacuum pump, pellets placed in the urethra, or shots may be recommended.

Retrograde Ejaculation Retrograde ejaculation is known as a sexual problem where all or part of a man's semen goes into the bladder instead of out the penis during ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation happens when muscles which are internal called sphincters will not function properly. The sphincter should automatically open or close a passage in the body. Semen combines urine in the bladder and leaves the body during urination, without harmful effects to the bladder. When a man experiences retrograde ejaculation, he many notice that little semen is discharged during ejaculation. The urine will appear cloudy chances are, and urinalysis will reveal the presence of semen. Blood sugars not controlled and the nerve damage due to this, are associated with retrograde ejaculation. Another reason for retrograde ejaculation might be prostate surgery or hypertensive medications.

Medication can be prescribed for retrograde ejaculation caused by diabetes. Most urologists experienced in the fields of fertility treatments can have ways to promote fertility.

Decreased Vaginal Lubrication Vaginal dryness in women often results from nerve damage to cells inside the vaginal area. This leads to great pain during sexual activity. As a result, this leads to lesser sexual responses.

Decreased or Absent Sexual Response Sexual problems caused by diabetes, blood pressure pills, and certain other prescribed medicines, drug or alcohol abuse can contribute to a diminished sexual response. An infection of a gynecologic nature, or conditions that relate to being pregnant or menopause, also do not help a woman's sexuality.

As many as 35-40 percent of women that are diabetic may have decreased or lack of interest in sex. As a result, the ability to achieve orgasm will probably result. Symptoms of a woman's sexual problems include the following:

No interest in sex.

A decrease or no sensations in the genital area.

No orgasm. The inability to achieve an orgasm.

Dryness in the vaginal area that is painful during sexual relations.

If you as a woman have any problems sexually, speak to your doctor and go over your complete history thoroughly. As with men, lab tests will usually be performed to help sort out the causes for these problems. Sometimes prescriptions or over-the-counter vaginal creams that serve as a lubricant may be helpful for ladies having a problem with dryness.

Counseling is sometimes in order as well as Kegel exercises that strengthen bladder muscles may be helpful too.

Diabetics are effected by many sexual problems.

Protection during sexual activity is important in avoiding troublesome yeast infections.
